Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment (TCM) for Melasma : A Holistic Approach
Melasma is a common skin pigmentation issue that often appears on the face, particularly on the cheekbones and forehead. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that the formation of melasma is closely related to internal organ dysfunction. The treatment focuses on holistic regulation, combined with external therapies.

Melasma specific causes in TCM

  1.  Liver Qi Stagnation : Emotional stress or pressure leads to stagnation of liver qi, obstructing blood flow and causing pigmentation.
  2. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness : Weak spleen function results in internal dampness, affecting the production of qi and blood, leading to dull skin and spots.
  3. Kidney Deficiency with Essence Depletion : Insufficient kidney qi and essence cause a lack of facial radiance and deepen pigmentation.
  4. Qi and Blood Deficiency : Poor circulation of qi and blood results in inadequate nourishment of facial skin, leading to pigmentation.

Internal Treatment : Syndrome Differentiation
TCM emphasizes syndrome differentiation in treating melasma. Based on the patient's constitution and underlying causes, specific herbal formulas are prescribed.

External Treatment
In addition to internal herbal remedies, TCM also emphasizes external therapies to directly target facial pigmentation.

  • Herbal Masks
  • Acupuncture Therapy, to regulates qi and blood flow by targeting specific acupoints, improving facial pigmentation.
  • Gua Sha Therapy, to promotes facial blood circulation to help fade spots.
  • Moxibustion Therapy, to warms and tonifies the spleen and kidneys, improving qi and blood deficiency.

Daily Lifestyle Recommendations
Dietary Adjustments

  • Consume foods rich in vitamin C (e.g., citrus fruits, kiwis, tomatoes) to inhibit melanin production.
  • Avoid spicy, greasy, and stimulating foods.
  • Incorporate foods that activate blood circulation, such as black fungus, hawthorn, and rose tea.

Emotional Management

  • Maintain a positive mood and avoid prolonged emotional stress.
  • Engage in moderate exercise to promote qi and blood circulation.

Sun Protection : Use sunscreen and protective measures when going outdoors to prevent UV-induced pigmentation.

TCM treats melasma holistically by regulating internal qi, blood, and organ function, combined with external therapies to address both symptoms and root causes. Through internal regulation, external care, and comprehensive lifestyle adjustments. TCM treatment for melasma requires persistence, as results are often gradual.
